Published in 1993, "First Indian on the Moon," by Sherman Alexie, is a collection of prose poems/short stories and poetry about childhood, poverty, alcoholism, interracial dating, love, sobriety, racism, and Native American identity. Freaks, I Would Steal Horses, All I Wanted to Do Was Dance. I like the following pieces just because: Tiny Treaties ("because I don't want to know the truth") I like the following pieces because of their final lines: Year of the Indian, Fire Storm, Family Cookbook I like the following pieces because of their form: The way/he creates unique forms/on the page/the lines centered/or justified/or separated/with slashes./But then/he creates/beauty/out of fry bread/and Pepsi/and basketball/and alcohol/and I turn/the page/one more/time. I like the following pieces because of their final lines: -Tiny Treaties ("because I don't want to know the truth") -Split De Sometimes I like the following pieces because of their form: -Year of the Indian, Fire Storm, Family Cookbook 2. Sometimes I wonder if Sherman Alexie is just messing with me the way/he creates unique forms/on the page/the lines centered/or justified/or separated/with slashes./But then/he creates/beauty/out of fry bread/and Pepsi/and basketball/and alcohol/and I turn/the page/one more/time.
